Surmise as a verb, means to make an educated guess or form an opinion based on limited information or evidence. It’s similar to infer, but with a slight difference. In everyday life, we surmise all the time. We do it when we’re trying to understand someone’s motives, predicting outcomes, or even interpreting ambiguous situations.
